Burglars dug a hole through the wall of a jeweller’s and made off with silverware and gold articles worth Rs 16 lakh, early Wednesday morning.

The thieves broke into Arihanth Jewellers at Gangadhar Nagar by drilling a hole in the separation wall adjoining Madhuchandra Bakery.

They entered the bakery through an exhaust fan vent, Kumaraswamy Layout police said.
The rusted grill of the fan vent allowed the burglars easy access to the bakery where they savoured sweets and soft drinks. They later chipped a hole in the six-inch thick separating wall and sneaked into the jewellery shop.

The noise of the Metro work going on nearby came in handy for them. As much as 40 kg of silver and 200 gram of gold have been stolen from the shop of Hasanmukh Jain.

Cash missing

According to sources, the shop had neither a CCTV, burglar’s alarm, nor a security guard.

Bakery owner S K Gopal told the police that about Rs 4,500 in cash was missing from his shop.

Fingerprint experts and a dog squad were brought to the spot. A jacket, a crowbar and a few other things were left behind by the culprits.

Police, who suspect it to be the handiwork of some local residents, said they were confident of cracking the case within 48 hours.
