HC raps cops over kidnap cases

Last Updated 16 December 2010, 18:22 IST

“Take it seriously. Children are not safe and they are being kidnapped. The police are taking it in a very casual manner and that is not right,” Justice Mohan M Shantanagoudar observed while hearing a petition related to the kidnap of a seven-year-old boy.

The petitioner V Nagaraj had submitted that his minor son Anil Kumar was kidnapped on July 23, 2008 and the kidnappers demanded Rs 10 lakh ransom. The boy was released after payment of Rs five lakh. He said the culprits were arrested by the Central Crime Branch Police for a different crime and no action has been initiated against them in spite of the police being alerted about involvement of the arrested in the kidnap.

The High Court had directed the Kolar Superintendent of Police to file the status report in a separate kidnap case. Since the SP failed to comply, the Court directed him to appear before it on December 15.

The SP who was present in the Court submitted that the delay was due to appointment of a new investigating officer on November 5 as there were allegations against the earlier officer.

He also submitted that they had arrested four people, but they had obtained bail.

The Court has directed them to complete the investigation and file the charge sheet within two months.
