At Murthy’s residence located in the Venkatamma Ramaiah (VR) Layout, near Gokula Railway Gate in Mathikere, on Thursday morning, the victims’s grief-stricken relatives pleaded with the media to leave them alone. His wife Kumuda was devastated and could not come to terms with the loss.

“Have a heart, don’t prick us with your questions. We are not in a position to talk to anyone,” pleaded a relative. Murthy has two children – Deepak and Monisha. While Deepak is pursuing BE final year, Monisha is a student of Bachelor of Physiotherapy (BPT) at the M S Ramaiah College.

Describing Murthy as a ‘sociable and friendly’ person, G Ramgopal, Joint Secretary of the VR Layout Residents’ Welfare Association (RWA), said the engineer moved to his present address in 2002. Before that, he lived in the Bescom Quarters at Jalahalli. He was a member of the Executive Council of the RWA.

“Murthy was one of the first persons to build a house in our colony. He was actively involved in overseeing the development of the locality. He was instrumental in bringing electricity connection to the neighbourhood,” Ramgopal told Deccan Herald.

John D’Souza, a neighbour, agreed. “He was a very nice man. We never heard of him fighting with anyone,” he said.

Murthy worked at Bescom’s CBAB Complex on K G Road and oversaw one of the four circles in the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike Area Zone. His ancestors were from Tamil Nadu, but he was born in Bangalore, one of his relatives said.

He was provided with a car, which would take him to office and drop him back home every day. Also, he travelled by the same car for his inspection visits. It was the same car in which he went to Anil Kumble Circle on Tuesday evening, when he was kidnapped.

Murthy had sent the driver away, saying he would return later.

With the arrest of an electricity contractor in connection with Murthy’s kidnap and murder, it is now learnt that the Bescom official’s firmness in levying fine for an alleged irregularity some time ago might have been a motive for the ghastly act.
