Slum-free India in 5 yrs

To take up various welfare programmes for the urban poor, the Budget has enhanced the allocation by 87 per cent to Rs 12,887 crore for the Jawaharlal Nehru National Renewal Mission.The government is targeting to build one lakh houses for slum-dwellers this year alone.Targeting to provide shelter to the rural poor under its Indira Awaas Yojana, the government increased the allocation to Rs 8,800 crore.

The finance minister also announced a new scheme Pradan Mantri Adarsh Gram Yojana in which a village where the SC population is above 50 per cent would be taken up for overall development. On a pilot basis, the government wants to implement this scheme in 1,000 villages; Rs 10 lakh would be allocated to beneficiary villages and rural development and poverty alleviation schemes will be implemented there.
