Last Updated 20 December 2010, 18:11 IST

The minister of state in the Mayawati government, Awadhesh Prasad Verma, who looks after the backward welfare department, allegedly caught one of the proposers by the collar and dragged him out of the office where the nomination papers were to be filed.

It was done in the presence of hundreds of people, including senior police officials. “Though the proposers and others kept shouting for help, the police looked the other way,” eye witnesses claimed.

The incident occurred at Dadaraul block in Uttar Pradesh’s Shahajahanpur district, about 175 kilometres from here, reports said.

Eye witnesses said that the ministers and his goons forcibly packed the two proposers in their vehicles and sped away from there. Apparetly the minister wanted to ensure his man did not face any opposition.

A case has already been registered against some of the kins of the same minister for abducting some persons recently.

The incident was likely to cause embarassment to the chief minister Mayawati, who has declared that she would not spare her own partymen if they indulged in illegal activities.
