Tribals threaten to boycott ZP, TP polls

Last Updated 21 December 2010, 16:28 IST

In a joint press release here, Shivanna, president of Budakattu Krishikara Sangha and Sreekanth, secretary, Deed have decided to stage one-day strike near deputy commissioner’s office here this week to highlight their problems.

No basic  amenities

At the recent Adivasi Kala Jantha, they said tribals who are living in forests have not been given school buildings, anganwadi buildings, houses to 600 families, community hall and basic amenities like drinking water, electricity, roads.

They were being treated unfairly by the government despite having submitted A & B forms under the Forest Rights Act 2006 for individual forest land rights and community collective rights, more than an year ago.

If the distinct forest rights committees take positive decision, then they would reconsider decision to boycott the polls being taken at the gramsabhas.

They demanded that gramsabhas would exercise their rights over territorial rights-habitat rights over that ancestral forests.

Action sought

It was the duty of the district level committee to issue pattas to the tribal families and also to the community. The meeting urged the chief secretary to take action against forest officials who have violated FRA 2006 and curtailed tribals rights over forest lands.

Title deeds

They said the proposed dharna near the DC’s office in Mysore was to urge the committee to issue tribals title deeds to their forest lands as per gramsabha resolution.

It was also resolved to request all the gramsabhas in tribal areas to consider boycotting the coming ZP/TP polls to be held on December 31 as tribals have not been honoured by the government, they added.
