Deputy Commissioner of Police (East Traffic) B A Muttanna himself monitored the situation with the assistance of two assistant commissioners of police, six police inspectors, 25 sub-inspectors, 35 head constables and 40 constables.

The entire stretch between Nimhans Convention Hall and Kidwai Hospital was blocked and vehicles were diverted towards Hosur Road and Bannerghatta Road. The traffic police had taken a slew of precautionary measures such as alerting the vehicle users through the media.

Muttanna told Deccan Herald: “We took the help of television channels and radio stations to inform the commuters. The police also sent messages to cellphones. Despite these initiatives, there was traffic congestion.”

The stretch was chock-a-block with a large number of vehicles. Some of the bikers were seen trying to sneak on the blocked stretch. The situation turned worse due to lack of discipline among the vehicle users, he added.

Traffic limped back to normalcy towards the evening. The situation is expected to improve on Wednesday as majority of the road users would have realised the blockade is for some more days. The policemen will be there on the road to guide the public, Muttanna said.

The work also disrupted power supply in the surrounding areas for a while as the electric cables were cut.

A senior Bescom engineer told Deccan Herald that normally it would take a lot of time to restore the power supply in such a situation.

“We were able to isolate the cable and supply the power from another feeder in the same area quickly,” the engineer added.
