NRI Social Activist Sujana Umesh dies in an accident

Sujana was swimming with her family when a rip current pulled her and other family members further into the water, according to police. Lifeguards and citizens tried to rescue her but initially lost sight of her in the water, according to police. Her body was recovered later Friday night. She is survived by her husband and two-year-old son.

Originally hailing from Karnataka, she served in several Telugu associations in Washington DC and was cultural director in Capital Area Telugu Sangam,CATS in Washnington DC. 

She was a founding core member and  women leader of NRIVA Family which runs several schemes like Adapt A Student, Permanent Education Fund, Resource Centeres and several scholarships in India. She helped lot of NRI members with Jobs, Career guidance, immigration matters and education guidance.

Her body was kept for public Viewing on Sunday at funeral house in Chantilly,VA where hundreds of people paid their last respects. Her body is being transported to India for funeral on Wednesday.
