‘Prateik resembles his mother’

NOSTALGIC Amitabh BachchanAlmost three decades after his near fatal injury during the filming of a fight scene for the film Coolie, Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan recently revealed that actress Smita Patil had a premonition about the accident a day before it took place.

“Smita was a unique lady and she had a premonition about my accident,” said Amitabh.

“I was shooting for Coolie in Bangalore in 1982. One night at about 1 am, I got a call from Smita. She said, ‘I’m sorry to disturb you Amitji, but are you okay?’ I said yes I’m fine.

Then she said, ‘I had a really bad dream and I just wanted to find out if you were okay’. Next morning, I had that accident on the sets of Coolie. It was just unbelievable,” Amitabh said.

“Then throughout my two-three months stay at the hospital, she was a regular visitor and even when I came back home, she used to come every evening to enquire if I was doing well. I can never forget that,” he added.

The 68-year-old walked down memory lane and remembered the incident while talking about Smita’s son Prateik, with whom he will be working in Prakash Jha’s forthcoming film Aarakshan.

Amitabh said that working with Prateik will be an emotional experience for him. “This is going to be my first association with Prateik. Whenever I see him, I think about his mother. The resemblance, the attitude, is very much like her. I’m afraid it’s going to be a little emotional for me working with him because Smita was a very dear friend,” he said.

The film, slated to go on floors on January 15, also stars Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone and Manoj Bajpayee.

It is based on caste-based reservations in government jobs and educational institutions. It will be shot in Bhopal and the makers are planning to release it on August 12, 2011 release.

Going the fantasy way

Hollywood heartthrob Johnny Depp has been roped in to play an undead skeleton wizard, Skulduggery, in a new fantasy movie. The Tourist star will play the lead character in the wizard movie based on a nine-book fantasy series by Irish author Derek Landy. The film, slated for a 2013 release, traces the story of 12-year-old Stephanie Edgley who is plunged into a magical world where she meets a skeleton wizard, played by Depp. “The books will make a fantastic series of films,” a source said. However, it won’t be the first time the 47-year-old actor will be playing a swashbuckling character. Depp is also famous for his quirky and fantasy characters in films like Pirates Of The Caribbean and Snow White And The Huntsman.

Down melody lane

India’s leading film song historian, Raju Bharatan in his book A Journey Down Melody Lane, delves deep into his treasure trove to tell us how singing is all about romancing, how composing is all about feelings, how the twain, stardom and songdom meet to make a part of the nation’s psyche.

There are stories aplenty about Lata including one on how she finally got to the point of marrying Maharajkumar Rajsinghji of Dungarpur, six years and forty nine days younger to her, but how, his father, Maharwal Laxmansinghji, put his foot down.

Apparently, Lata also had deep affection for music director C Ramchandra, but then it had cooled off.

‘I don’t remember my films’

Actress Reese Witherspoon admits that she doesn’t remember the names of movies she has acted in nor her performances.

“I have absolute amnesia about every movie I have ever made,” said the actress. “I won’t watch them because if I did, I would spiral into a state of self hate. But sometimes, I catch the odd clip of something. I look at it and think, ‘I have absolutely no memory of that’. It’s really weird.”

When size doesn’t matter

MAGICAL A scene from Gulliver's Travels. This New Year’s eve, be prepared to go on a fun, magical ride with Gulliver as he travels to the magnificent land of Lilliput!

Fox Star Studios India’s Gulliver’s Travels, a comedy, adventure film adapted from the world famous story book of the same name by author Jonathan Swift, is all set to release on December 31.

In this 3D, modern, family comedy take on the classic tale, Jack Black (star of
Kung Fu Panda and School of Rock) plays the role of Lemuel Gulliver, a lowly
mailroom clerk at a New York newspaper.

After Gulliver bluffs his way into an assignment writing about the Bermuda Triangle, he goes there only to be transported to an undiscovered land, Lilliput.

In this fantastical new world, Gulliver is, at last, a larger-than-life figure — in size and ego — especially after he starts telling tall tales, taking credit for the world’s greatest inventions, and placing himself at the centre of its most historic events.
Gulliver’s position is enhanced even further when he leads his new friends in a daring battle against their longtime enemies.

But when Gulliver loses it all and puts the Lilliputians in peril, he must find a way to undo the damage.

Ultimately, Gulliver becomes a true giant among men only when he learns
that it’s how big you are on he inside that counts.

Directed by Rob Letterman, Gulliver’s Travels boasts of an impressive starcast.

The film stars Jack Black, Jason Segel, Emily Blunt and Amada Peet. The movie is filled with adventure, laughter and extraordinary special effects created by noted visual effects house Hydraulx (of 2012 fame) and premier visual effects house WETA Digital (which has earlier done the special effects of Avatar, The Lord of the Rings trilogy and King Kong).

With a brilliant performance by Jack Black and the magical 3D experience,
Gulliver’s Travels promises to be an entertaining ride that will be enjoyed by the
entire family.
