He was speaking after inaugurating a workshop on ‘Makkala Yakshagana Prasangagalu’ organised by Kallagangotri Yakshagana Kendra, Someshwara in association with Chowta Pratishtana, Karnataka Yakshagana Bayalata Academy and Dr P Dayananda Pai and P Satish Pai Yakshagana Centre, Mangalore University at University College premises here on Saturday.

Stressing the need for exploring new possibilities in children’s yakshagana, Rao said that when the children are made to perform a characters and prasangas that are staged by the yakshagana troupes, there are more chances of the performance turning unrealistic.
“The complicated themes and connotations used in the popular yakshagana prasangas can not be understood by the children. There is no point in staging such complicated prasangas without the child understanding what their role is all about,” he said.

Litterateur Prof Amrutha Someshawara said that exclusive prasangas should be written in future keeping in mind the children’s yakshagana. “Yakshagana staged by the children must be simple, thus allowing them to enjoy what they are doing. The concepts of tragedy, romance, spirituality should be discarded from the children’s yakshagana. Along with it, ‘Hejjeggarike’ must also be made simple, making it easy for the children to follow,” he said and added that introducing the characters like animals and birds would be of good in children’s yakshagana.
