JOIN USChaitra (24) and Varshini are the dead. In a three-page suicide note, Chaitra stated that her husband Shashidhar’s alleged affair with an unidentified woman “had forced her to take the extreme step.” The couple were married for six years and had two children, including a two-and-a-half-year-old boy.
The incident occurred at 2 pm when Chaitra and Varshini were alone at home as Shashidhar, according to police, had gone out to cast his vote in the panchayat election, and his mother Kamalamma was busy in their farm field.
Neighbours broke the door open and rushed Chaitra to hospital where she was declared brought dead. Her family members claimed Shashidhar had set Chaitra and Varshini ablaze.
“My sister had complained to me several times how Shashidhar and Kamalamma ill-treated her. But I advised her to exercise restraint. Unfortunately, he murdered her as he wanted to marry another woman,” Chaitra’s brother Devaraj said.
Rift in family
Chaitra’s mother and Shashidhar’s father were siblings. A rift cropped up between the couple recently when Chaitra began suspecting him of cheating on her. An unidentified woman used to call up Shashidhar quite frequently and at odd hours. This sowed seeds of suspicion in Chaitra’s mind, police said.
“In the beginning, I kept quiet assuming she called up my husband to discuss business matters. I began suspecting him when he failed to give convincing answers to my questions. He never told me the truth,” Chaitra wrote in the suicide note.
Shashidhar and his mother have been booked under various Sections of the Indian Penal Code. Police are on the lookout for Shashidhar.
