Perfect start to the New Year

All those looking to bring in 2011 with fun and laughter can join Gulliver as he travels to the magnificent land of Lilliput on New Year’s Eve. Fox Star Studios India’s Gulliver’s Travels, a comedy, adventure film adapted from the world famous story book of the same name by author Jonathan Swift, is the perfect family outing as the film released on
December 31.

In this 3D, modern, family comedy take on the classic tale, Jack Black (Kung Fu
Panda and School of Rock) is Lemuel Gulliver, a lowly mailroom clerk at a New York newspaper. After Gulliver bluffs his way into an assignment writing about the Bermuda Triangle, he goes there only to be transported to an undiscovered land, Lilliput. In this fantastical new world, Gulliver is, at last, a bigger-than-life figure — in size and ego — especially after he starts telling tall tales, taking credit for his world’s greatest inventions, and placing himself at the centre of its most historic events.

Directed by Rob Letterman, the film stars Jack Black, Jason Segel, Emily Blunt and Amada Peet and is filled with adventure, laughter and extraordinary special effects.

‘Why would I want to remake a classic?’

Film-maker Tigmanshu Dhulia says his next film Sahib, Bibi Aur Gangster, starring Jimmy Sheirgill and Mahi Gill, is not a remake of Guru Dutt’s 1962 movie Sahib, Bibi Aur Ghulam.
Dhulia says his film, starring Jimmy Sheirgill, Mahi Gill and Randeep Hooda,
has nothing in common with the classic, which was about the fall of feudal lords in

Dhulia, best known for his film Haasil on campus politics, says his upcoming movie is a social thriller and delves into the contemporary world. “My film is not a remake of Guru Dutt’s movie. It is a different story. Sahib, Bibi Aur Ghulam is an all time classic. Why would I want to remake it? I am more interested in telling new stories,” said

The director, who finished shooting the film within a month in Gujarat’s Baria area, says the film is a story of relationships amid changing social dynamics. “My films are known for their strong political tones because I like to explore how politics impacts the day-to-day life of people and my new film is no exception,” said Dhulia.

“Sahib, Bibi Aur Gangster explores the changing dynamics and relationships in a family of a princely state, which is past its glory. Since they have been rulers, it is difficult for them to adjust with the changing socio-political scenario,” the director said.

Dhulia, who has three films ready — Shagird, Showman and Pan Singh Tomar — plans to release Sahib, Bibi Aur Gangster in April next year. His film Pan Singh Tomar, starring Irrfan Khan in a real-life inspired role of a sportsman turned dacoit, is with UTV and slated to hit theatres in 2011.

The director also plans to release Nana Patekar starrer Shagird, about a corrupt police official, on February 25.

“The release of Pan Singh Tomar is upto UTV. They have many more projects but the film will release in 2011. But I am planning to release my film Shagird in February,” Dhulia said.

After working on many hard-hitting projects, Dhulia plans to take a break by making a love story. “I will soon begin my next project Milan Talkies, which is a love story,” he added.

Leaving the diva behind

She is best known for her over-the-top outfits but Lady Gaga has traded her signature leotards and heels for slippers and smocks to impress her boyfriend’s parents. The Poker Face hitmaker is spending the holidays in Omaha, Nebraska, with her bartender boyfriend Luc Carl and his parents. So she has dumped her elaborate security, dressed casually and is helping out in the family kitchen, according to reports.

The outrageous singer, whose album The Fame Monster is the biggest seller of the year, selling 5.8 million copies worldwide, also gave a posh hotel the swerve to stay in Luc’s old bedroom with him.

“Gaga is used to the best hotel suites in the world but wanted to sleep with Luc in his old bed in the room he grew up in,” said a source.

“The holidays are a special family time so she wanted to slot in without any fuss. It’s a chance for her to get to know them, show her domestic side and prove there is more to her than what they see on the TV,” the source added. The hitmaker’s only extravagance was treating the family to a trip to the local bowling alley and casino, where Carl’s dad taught her how to play blackjack.

Going down on his knees

Popular TV show host Siddharth Kannan was recently in New Delhi to host an event. Many celebrities attended the do including actress Vidya Balan. Siddharth and Vidya have been good friends for a long time now. They did meet and greet each other like old pals. Since the cold weather in Delhi left Vidya shivering, Siddharth offered his jacket in a total filmy style by going down on his knees. Vidya was totally floored by this gesture of Siddharth and even blushed a bit.

Their camaraderie strengthened when Sid and Vidya started conversing in Tamil in front of a packed audience, who seemed to enjoy every bit of their tete-a-tete! Vidya was surely charmed by Siddharth.
