Protest against jumbo menace

Last Updated 11 January 2011, 18:03 IST

The protest followed an elephant attack in which a fifth standard girl student, Manjushree sustained injuries.  Manjushree was on her way to school along with her friends when a wild elephant charged at her from a nearby field. Scared, the children ran helter-skelter.
Manjushree fell down and sustained injuries. She has been admitted to Rayarakoppalu government hospital.

The irate residents blocked the road and staged a protest in front of the hospital.
Assistant Commissioner Nagendra Prasad rushed to the spot and pacified the villagers stating that a report on elephant attacks has already been submitted to the government.
As the slogan-raising protesters refused to budge, Ranger Ravindra and police officials said
a meeting will be convened with the deputy commissioner on Wednesday to discuss the issue.  The incidents of elephant attack are on the rise in the district as the elephant corridor has been encroached for coffee plantation and cultivation of other crops  shrinking the forest areas.
