FIRST EXPERIENCE

Learning to appreciate music

SKILLFUL Shubhendra Rao

Sitarist Shubhendra Rao, who performed at Kendriya Vidyalaya, National Aeronautics Limited Campus recently, mesmerised the music lovers – the high school students – with some beautiful renditions.

To get the students more involved in the concert, Shubhendra Rao had a brief interactive session prior to the concert wherein he explained them the importance and vastness of Indian classical music. He also briefed them about the origin of musical instruments like sitar and tabla.

Shubhendra Rao began the evening with Raag Brindavani Saarangi. He was accompanied by Gurumurthy Vaidya on tabla. The recital began in a slow pace and gradually picked up tempo.

For most students, it was the first experience of listening to a virtuoso and they enjoyed every minute of the evening.

Shubhendra Rao took time off after the concert and interacted with the students. He patiently sat through the session and answered all the queries. “It is very special to have such a young audience who are fresh and unbiased. I agreed to this concert with the idea of sharing with children the knowledge about classical music and getting them to appreciate our culture and art. I had a wonderful response. The students came up with good questions that showed their interest in music,” he says.

He adds, “I made sure that I performed only for half an hour. This was to give the students the right dose of music. A long concert would be too much for them.”
