India to soon have its first aviation museum

"One important decision that the government of India has taken is to set up a national museum for aviation. This would be one of the largest museums of aviation anywhere in the world," Patel said after a meeting of the centenary celebration committee here.
According to him, the proposed museum would be in New Delhi only and work on it would start later this year.

"The location most probably will be at the Safdarjung Airport and the museum would be called Rajiv Gandhi National Museum for Aviation," Patel said.

He evaded questions on the cost. "Cost is not the issue, we want to do it in the best possible manner," Patel said, also adding a a national university of civil aviation would be established, which would be known as Aviation Training and Management University.

While Patel did not disclose any further detail about the proposed university, he said that his ministry would ask universities across the country to add a subject related to civil aviation in their curriculum.

Patel further announced that around 100 school kids from every district of the country will be taken on a free air trip to make them aware about the growing aviation industry.

"We are going to have a competition for students in all the 600 districts of our country. 100 students from each of the districts would be selected for free flights within the country," he said.

A special postage stamp and a coin will be released later this year to commemorate the 100th year of Indian civil aviation.

India will celebrate the completion of 100 years of its first commercial flight Feb 18, by declaring 2011 as 'Civil Aviation Centenary Year.'

The first flight in Indian skies took place Feb 18, 1911, when a commercial plane flew between Allahabad and Naini in Uttar Pradesh.

Meanwhile the first commercial international flight, connecting the national capital to Karachi and beyond took place in 1912 and was operated by the erstwhile Imperial Airways.
