Police nab 4 for Rohi murder

Mangalore Rural Police have arrested four persons in connection with the murder of rowdy sheeter Vamanjoor Rohi alias Rohidas Shetty.

The arrested are Sampath Bhandary (30) of Urundadi Gudde in Panjimogru, Dhanraj Poojary (26) of Kalbavinagara in Kottara, Santhosh Kottari (23) of Jyothinagar in Vamanjoor and Krishnappa Salian (59) of Jyothinagar in Vamanjoor.

Vamanjoor Rohi had been murdered in the wee hours of July 5 in the residence of Krishnappa Salian at Jyothinagar in Tiruvail village. The rowdy sheeter was facing 19 criminal cases, including two murders.

Talking to media persons on Friday, Dakshina Kannada Superintendent of Police Dr A Subrahmanyeshwar Rao said the police have recovered four sharp weapons, one pistol, seven live rounds, three mobile phones, a car and a motor bike from the arrested.
The role of Nikhil Shetty, an aide of underworld criminal Koraga Vishwanath Shetty is clear in the murder plot. However, the discontent in Krishnappa Salian’s family about Vamanjoor Rohi led to the execution of the murder, the SP said.

“Koraga Vishwanath Shetty had asked Nikhil Shetty to eliminate Rohi since Rohi was an obstacle for his activities in Mangalore. In this regard, Nikhil had given a cash of Rs 1 lakh and a revolver to one Bhaskar. Bhaskar, in turn, had assigned the task to one Sampath Bhandary (one among the arrested).

“In the meantime, there was a growing discontent against Rohi in the family of Krishnappa Salian where Rohi was a frequent visitor. He used to stay there often. Krishnappa Salian had conveyed his wish to eliminate Rohi to neighbour Santhosh Kottari (one among the arrested). Dhanraj Poojary, a friend of Sampath Bhandary, learnt this from Kottari. All of them together planned the murder plot.

“When Rohi visited Krishnappa Salian’s house on July 4 night, he was served meal mixed with sleeping pills. Shalini, the sister of Krishnappa Salian’s wife, allegedly informed Santhosh Kottari and his team regarding the presence of Rohi in the house. As it was planned, the door of Salian’s house was not bolted that night, to help the murderers,” Dr Rao explained.

The SP said police are yet to question Shalini to know about her actual role in the murder. He also said the department will seek permission to evoke KCOCA (Karnataka Control of Organised Crime Act) against the arrested.

“Papers are ready with the department to issue red corner notice to Koraga Vishwanath Shetty and Nikhil Shetty,” he added.
