Gujarat plans women economic zone

Conceived at the recently held Vibrant Gujarat business summit following a proposal by business women committee of Gujarat Chamber of Commerce & Industries (GCCI), it is expected to provide a unique platform for business women in the micro, small and medium enterprise totally run by women entrepreneurs.

GCCI Women Wing Chairperson Deepa Shah said currrently 60 enterpreneurs have expressed interest to set up business at the WEZ. The initiative would also create jobs for women, Shah said adding she proposes to set up jewellery manufacturing unit at WEZ and would create nearly 5,000 jobs mostly for females. At the upcoming zone, 70 per cent of the jobs would be reserved for females though certain work especially, in the auto and engineering sections, would require male workers as well.

The WEZ would have diversified businesses ranging from handicraft, jewellery making, textile, engineering, furniture, pharmaceutical, plastic and packaging. “There will also be apparel houses setting up their shop for readymade garment unit,’’ said WEZ Committee Member Meena Kaviya.

WEZ is expected to attract Rs 50 crore investment and will have facilities for basic education for children of working women and child care centre where women could leave their children. “There are also plans to for skill development and common facility centres including administration wing, besides an exhibition hall to display products of the member units.
