Advanced imaging facility opened at Nimhans

A facility which can track human intelligence by producing brain wiring images has been set up for the first time in India .

Explaining its functions, Dr S K Shankar, head of the department of Neuropathology, said that actual wiring of the brain can be seen in these images with the help of Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) facility. “The facility can give a finer Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), which will be useful to diagnose patients with head injuries, Alzheimer’s disease and other problems. Secondly, it has the facility of EEG (electroencephalogram), which records the electrical activity of the brain,” he said. Although the facility will be used for research, it will also be utilised for the benefit of patients with head injuries, said Dr Shankar.

Speaking after inaugurating the Centre, Azad said the Central Government was planning to set up four more institutions like NIMHANS in the country.

Azad said that the Health Ministry was planning to diagnose 50 crore people for diabetes in a span of three to four years, since India has been termed the diabetic capital of the world.
