A bedroom is a personal space and has to be pleasant enough to provide comfort, relaxation and peace of mind.

It is that quiet corner which is not just about privacy, but is also a clear reflection of an individual’s personality and habits.

A few tips can ensure that your bedroom remains the most loved and comfortable part of the house for you. It is not just about how to decorate it with expensive showpieces and stick to a theme to decorate it but about how to make it an extension of yourself.
Give it a personal touch

If you are into any hobbies, and don’t have a spare room in the house to practise it, then of course your bedroom becomes your studio cum display room.  A poet can get his or her poetries framed to put on the walls. An artist can use the same space to display paintings. Often people who are into music like to keep their instruments in bedrooms.
My father liked playing harmonium and it was always kept close to his bed. At night when he would not feel sleepy he would play it until he felt ready to go to the land of the nod.

Proper lighting

Mellow lights set the right mood for sleep and also add a nice dreamy intimate touch to a bedroom.  Around sleep time a bedroom lit with dim lights like, side table lamps or coloured bulbs look welcoming and soothe your nerves.

However, there should also be an arrangement for some bright light, like tube lights, when you have some work to do like reading, sewing or any activity which requires proper lighting. At daytime, the best way to illuminate your room is through natural light.

Rugs and mats

Wall to wall carpets look nice and make bedrooms cozy enough, but they need thorough cleaning and if you happen to be one of those who are allergic to dust, then you can settle for nice mats and washable rugs.  Small fluffy rugs give a pleasant look particularly if they are spread near the bed.

For many,  after getting up from sleep the feel of putting their foot down on a carpet is much pleasant then getting in contact with cold uncarpeted floor.

Photos

Bedrooms are primarily a private space. You can have it decorated in a style that reflects your personality.

Photos add that personal touch to a bedroom. The walls and shelves provide a nice spot to display them.

Snaps from your childhood, your teenage years and of your close friends remind you of the good old happy days and stimulate you.

It is the norm for couples to adorn their bedrooms with their wedding photos, and looking at them fills them with memories of that important occasion.

Some people have this habit of reading a book before retiring to bed.  It is a good idea to keep some books near the bed, if you have the aforementioned habit.

Mood up lifters

A bedroom is certainly the place where you feel like confining yourself when you are feeling stressed out and depressed.

It usually helps to keep something in your room which could cheer you up when you are feeling down. Like photos of your kids, your spouse or mementoes that can remind you of the good things that have happened to you.

Putting words of wisdom or nice quotations in bold font at a place where you can easily throw a glance can also help ward of the negative thoughts.

Besides, there should be a corner reserved for keeping dry food stuff and a bottle of water (nobody likes going out in the middle of night to the kitchen to get a glass of water).

For homemakers

Often stay-at-homse-women suffer from this feeling that they have restricted themselves to the job of homemakers and were much creative and imaginative before having kids.
For them it is advisable to use some space in their room to remind themselves of whatever creative hobby they liked indulging in when they had ample free time.

For instance, if one loved  handicrafts or glass painting, then she can have a thing or two in her room; those who loved thread work can get their pieces framed to adorn the walls or simply if one had been an avid key chain collector she can go for an attractive key chain holder to hang on the walls.

The sole idea is to keep your creativity alive and have something around you to sustain your energy so that you can carry on with your hobbies and derive sense of achievement.
Keep it clutter free

No matter how big or small the room is the space should be used wisely. It must not give a stuffy feeling and messy look. There should be some free space for you to walk a few paces when immersed in a thinking process.

The placing of furniture should be done in a way that it does not become difficult to dust and clean it.
