Patriotic fervor, cultural events mark R-day in Udupi

Addressing the gathering after receiving the guard of honour, Higher Education Minister and District-in-Charge Minster Dr V S Acharya informed that the first ever Agriculture College of coastal belt is all set to open its windows towards research and other agriculture related activities during the year 2011-12.

Measures have been taken to present ‘Mulageni’ (Tenancy Act) in the assembly session this month to solve the problems of tenancy encountered by the people in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts. Similarly, the government has ordered to entrust the leased land to the lease holders, who are engaged in cashew cultivation in the district.

The Government has sanctioned Rs 3 crore for the post graduate courses in Tenkanidiyur Government College. As many as 11,000 beneficiaries have been identified under Bhagyalaxmi Yojane in the district, he added. About 1,270 houses have been sanctioned under Matsyaashraya Yojane. A sum of Rs 37.15 crore has been allotted for the 3rd phase works of Malpe fishing harbor. A sum of Rs 3.10 crore has been sanctioned for Hangarukatte harbour. A sum of Rs 30 crore is allocated for the construction of Koderi fishing harbour near Byndoor, Acharya said.

Construction works of the hostel for Polytechnique College students’ built at the cost of Rs 1 crore each at Udupi and Karkala will commence shortly. The works on Morarji Desai hostel in Shankarnarayana village built at the cost of Rs 90.20 lakhs is under progress. Administrative approval has been sanctioned for the girls’ hostel at Bannanje that accommodates students after their 10th standard. A sum of Rs 298 lakhs has been allotted for the purpose, he stated.

The Government has released Rs 6 crore under emergency relief fund to compensate the damages incurred owing to natural calamities. Of which, Rs 239 lakhs have been utilized for 76 construction works. As many as 5,182 beneficiaries have been identified under Sandhya Suraksha Yojane in the district. Udupi Power Corporation Limited is generating 600 MW powers supporting the measure taken to sustain power efficiency, he added.
Athlete Ashwini Chidananda Shetty and Kabbadi player Mamatha Poojary who brought laurels to the district with their outstanding achievements in Asian Games were honoured on the occasion.

As many as 17 teams including District Armed Reserve Force, Fire department, home guards, NCC, Navel cadets and school children took part in the parade.
