<p>Besides being one of the oldest colleges in Bangalore, the Central College's claim to fame is that it was where the Raman Effect was announced to the world, a discovery that fetched the Nobel Prize to C V Raman. <br /><br />On March 16, 1928, under the joint auspices of the South Indian Science Association and the Science Club of Central College, C V Raman announced to the world his work on scattering of light, eventually known as the Raman Effect. <br /><br />Former Bangalore University Vice-Chancellor, Dr N R Shetty says that with the development of Bangalore as a science hub, it was necessary for more institutions to raise to world-class standards on the lines of the Indian Institute of Science.<br /><br />The proposal envisages to develop Central College as a non-affiliating unitary university. This will be on the lines of universities such as the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, which do not affiliate any colleges. The business of affiliation will then be left to both Bangalore University and Bangalore South University. </p>.<p>However, the transformation may take years as Bangalore University is expected to function out of the Central College campus till the development of the new campus at Hoskote.<br /><br />To sweeten the deal for Bangalore University after the loss of Central College, the State Council has proposed to merge the nearby government institutions with the university. <br /><br />Institutions such as government arts college, science college, Maharani's arts college, Maharani's Science College, Home Science College, and R C College of Commerce can be transferred to Bangalore University as constituent colleges. The task could be accomplished under Section 82 of the Karnataka State Universities Act 2000, which allows such transfers.<br /><br /></p>
