Yeddyurappa dreams up a voodoo scare

Bewitching politics

It is the fear of the dark forces that has now gripped an embattled Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa whose fascination for astrology is legion.

Facing barbs from several quarters, including Governor H R Bhardwaj and the Opposition, and mired in myriad legal tangles, the chief minister on Monday said he was facing a threat to his life from black magic.

And his alleged tormentors are his political adversaries -- the Janata Dal (secular) and the Congress -- though he stopped short of naming them.

“I am not sure about reaching my home from Vidhana Soudha and vice-versa whenever I venture out. My adversaries are resorting to all kinds of witchcraft and other evil designs. But, I won’t accept defeat,” he told reporters on his arrival at the Suttur mutt here on Monday.

Asked how black magic could be threat to his life, Yeddyurappa countered: “What else is it?” He said he was neither scared nor would he be cowed down by such attempts and would complete his term of five years.

Yeddyurappa frequently visits temples, conducts 'yagna' (oblation to fire god Agni), seeks blessings of religious heads and sanctions lakhs of rupees in his budgets to institutions run by them.

He berated the Opposition for what he said raising a high pitch propaganda with baseless allegations to project him as a criminal. “They demanded my resignation since they are not being able to tolerate the development works done by the government,” he said, adding he would start a state-wide tour to “expose” the Opposition.

Opposition bemused

Both opposition parties- the Congress and the JD (S) were quick to dismiss Yeddyurappa's claim as a ‘sham’ and instead took potshots at him saying he had been  indulging in “black magic” to hang on to power despite land scandals allegedly involving him.

“If the chief minister himself says there is threat to his life, what protection he can give to the state's people?” state Congress chief G Parameshwara asked. “It is he who indulges in such things,” said Leader of Opposition Siddaramaiah of the Congress. JD-S leader in the Assembly H D Revanna echoed Siddaramaiah's view.

CM to ‘expose’ scams of Oppn

Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa said on Monday that he would place before the people all the scams involving leaders of the Opposition parties in March, after presenting the budget in February, reports DHNS from Tumkur.

He was speaking to reporters at the helipad of the Mahatma Gandhi stadium in Tumkur. “For one month, I will tour the entire State and apprise the people of the scams,” the chief minister said.
