The expo has been initiated under Prime Minister Employment Generation Programme. The target for this year under the programme is 54 beneficiaries. Of which, 50 beneficiaries have been provided with the financial assistance to set up the industrial units. The DIC will be able to cover the target within two months, he added.

The beneficiaries for the programme have been divided under two categories viz general category and special category. SC/ST, OBC communities and women come under special category. People under special category in urban areas will be given Rs 25 lakh to set up the units, while Rs 35 lakh for the people in rural areas, Murthy said.

He said the government prefers investment in rural areas in contrast to urban areas. The scheme facilitates service sector units and production sector units.

In Udupi district, there is a huge demand for setting up of production sector units. The industrial scenario here is basically production oriented, he added.

There are 25 to 30 stalls in the expo which will display chennapattana toys, lavancha products, honey products, cashews, camphor products, paintings, Khadi products and fancy items.
