Marriage halls add to local woes

Public nuisance

Of late, defunct industrial units in Vishweshwaranagar Industrial Suburb in Mysore are being converted into marriage halls. While the landlords are heaving a sigh of relief, for locals it has become a big nuisance.

This came to fore when a few residents of Ward 11 aired their grievances during the pre-dawn padayatra of parliamentary secretary to CM and MLA S A Ramdas in the City on
Thursday. A resident alleged that there were as many as 15 marriage halls in Vishweshwaranagar alone. They cannot go to bed until and unless the native drums played at the ritual was stopped. While a few lacked underground drainage system, some others lacked parking facilities. The vehicles are mostly parked in front of the neighbouring houses, making it difficult for the residents. Waste collected from the marriage halls are dumped on the vacant surroundings and stray animals, especially cattle feed on them. At times, the crowd of cattle flocking near the left over food affects the smooth flow of traffic in the area, he further alleged.

Ramdas promised to bring the matter to the notice of Mysore City Corporation commissioner and the police authorities.

The locality is not receiving Cauvery water and the residents are depending upon borewells. The drains were filled with silt and roads with potholes. Ramdas instructed the officials to prepare a blueprint to convert the main road of 16th cross into a double road.

He said that there was a plan to widen the same road for three metres on both the sides under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).

On the allegations of encroachments of footpath near Sterling theatre, Ramdas instructed officials concerned  to issue notice to all shopkeepers, who have encroached the space, to clear the same.
