Kiran Bedi favours stringent Lokpal Bill

"We have to see what sort of Lokpal Bill the Government is going to bring this time. There is a need for a stringent Lokpal Bill to create fear among corrupt people," she told reporters on the sidelines of a function here.

The Bill seeks to create the institution of an ombudsman to tackle political corruption.

"Corruption was on the rise as there was neither fear nor tough punishment for those indulging in it," Bedi said and pointed out loopholes in the present set of laws. Underlining the importance of media in fight against graft, the retired IPS officer said it should play a major role in campaigns against the menace.

Accusing the IAS officers of committing irregularities in the disbursement of relief amount to the victims of the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy, Bedi asked media persons whether they want such officers and politicians to grow.

The former top cop is in the city to promote `Aap Ki Kachehri', a reality TV show that solves disputes in which she plays the arbitrator.
