GPs oppose amendments to bill

The members of the Grama Panchayat Hakkottaya Andolana will also send letters and telegrams urging the government to end all discussions on this Amendment that aims to weaken the role of elected governments.

The move comes in the wake of the news that the Government is seriously considering the re-introduction of the Karnataka Panchayat Raj (Amendment) Bill, 2007 in the present Assembly session.

The amendment bill which was sent for reconsideration by the then Governor T N Chaturvedi, aimed to give the local MLA powers to decide the beneficiaries of the Ashraya scheme and the other schemes, instead of the Gram Sabhas and Gram Panchayats.

In a release, members of the Panchayat Raj Hakkottaya Andolana stated that any moves to curtail the powers of the Panchayat are obviously retrogressive and run counter to the trends towards the process of democratic decentralisation.

“In this regard we hope that the Government will seriously consider the implications of the moves it is contemplating and not trade our constitutional rights (the Constitutional Rights of the Citizens of Karnataka) and the spirit of our Constitution,” the release stated.
