Intro talk on ICS exam held

An introductory talk was organised at the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) here on Wednesday for those who are taking the Institute of Chartered Ship Brokers Qualifying Examination in April 2010. Delivering the talk, KCCI former president Capt John Prasad Menezes said that it is a continuing professional education programme which prompts the participants to invest in themselves.

The exam, which is conducted in every April is the gateway to becoming a member of the Institute of Chartered Ship Brokers, an international agency based in London. It was founded at the time of the Industrial revolution to enable the shipping industry. The membership was open to foreigners only in 1984 and only in 1998, a chapter was set up in Chennai, first in India.

Those who pass the exam will get a degree equivalent to B Com in shipping, Capt Menezes said and elaborated on the various topics to be covered and answered certain frequently asked questions. He explained the opportunities available to a person once he has passed the exam. Around 10 people are taking the exams this year in Mangalore. 

Capt Menezes himself is a member of the Institute and one of the first in India to qualify as a member, in 1999. He said that the preparatory classes for the exam will be begin on May 23 and the first session will be attended by Education Officer and President of Institute of Charted Ship Brokers, Chennai chapter.

President of Port Users’ Welfare Association K K Pillai and President of KCCI Srinivas S Kamath were present on the occasion.
