UN honour for Calcutta

The Calcutta University has added one unique feather to its cap with the United Nations conferring it the rare honour of becoming a research and teaching hub for peace studies.
The University is the only one in India to have been chosen by the UN Academic Impact as one of the ten partner institutions across the globe to carry forward the UN messages and principles. Apart from Calcutta University in India, nine other universities namely from Japan, the US,Pakistan, Ecuador,Israel, Romania, South Africa and Korea have been shortlisted for the programme.  

Scholarship programme

The ZEIT-Stiftung Ebelin und Gerd Bucerius requests applications for 6-8 Ph.D. scholarships in migration studies. The Bucerius Ph.D. scholarship programme in migration studies, ‘Settling Into Motion’ offers up to eight scholarships for Ph.D. theses addressing migration in changing societies. For 2011, research applications on, ‘Migration, Citizenship and Human Rights’ are especially welcome. Qualified Ph.D. students of social sciences can apply until February 24, 2011.

PESIT and PESSE post record placements

PES Institute of Technology (PESIT) and PES School of Engineering (PESSE) have jointly recorded an impressive 1,007 placements with PESIT placing 782 out of an eligible student base of 927 and PESSE placing 224 out of an eligible student base of 266.
However the number stands at 1,223 for students with multiple offers.  The compensation offered ranges from Rs. 3.13 to Rs 9.3 lakh per annum and the average compensation offered is Rs 4.5 lakh per annum.  TCS has been the largest recruiter with 450 students getting placed while DE Shaw has offered the highest compensation of Rs 9.3 lakh per annum.

Free training for artisans

Canara Bank is offering free residential training in the Canara Bank sponsored KPJ Prabhu Artisans Training Institute, Jogaradoddi and invites application for admission. The training will be for Wood and Stone Carving (18 months), Metal Crafts -— Casting and Embossing (18 months), and Terracotta — Art Pottery (6 months). The training is conducted by well experienced teachers. Food and accommodation are also free of charge. Those interested must have passed 7th standard and must be able to read and write. They should be unemployed youth, between ages 18 and 35. There will be an interview on February 25, 2011 from 9 am onwards. Applications can be obtained on or before the interview date. Candidates should attend the interview at their own cost.
Candidate should compulsorily bring their parents/ guardians to attend the interview. Preference will be given to rural area/ weaker section/ SC/ ST candidates
