Expressway authority on the anvil, says Kamal Nath

“I am examining the possibility of setting up an expressway authority,” the minster said at a conclave on national highways organised by the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII).  The minister also vowed to make radical changes in his ministry to ensure that all road building works meet the deadline.  The minister, who pledged to construct 20 km roads per day, said: “The ministry for road transport and highways needs a complete overhaul. We have to set strict time-bound targets to achieve our goal of constructing 7,000 km of road per year.”

Last year, the national highways constructed was an average 4 km per day and now it has reached around 8 km per day. Officials of the ministry said that it would need another 18 months to construct 20 km per day as the system has to be put in place to meet the target.

Giving another impetus to the development of roads, the ministry is also mulling setting up of a Road Finance Corporation this year on the lines of the the Power Finance Corporation.  The corporation will help increase public investment in road building and make credit available to such projects.

“This expressway authority along with the Road Finance Corporation are part of this year’s target plan that we are going to announce soon,” the minister said.
