Last Updated 24 February 2011, 18:54 IST

Police said the crime took place in the evening of January 24, at a eucalyptus grove near Laxmipura on Anekal-Kanakapura Main Road, about 45 km from Bangalore.

The victim and her friend were part of a community service programme. The two had camped in Anekal.

On January 24, the two students boarded a KSRTC bus from Anekal and were heading for Laxmipura where they were supposed to initiate children’s participation in a rural hygiene programme. After alighting near the main road near Laxmipura, the two German girls started walking.

Waylaid

They were spotted by the members of the gang, who forcibly took them to the eucalyptus grove, where one of them was raped. The other girl managed to escape and alerted her seniors.

Search continues

Four of the suspects have been arrested while the search is on for the remaining three. The arrested were Ejaz Ahmed and Imran Pasha from Gurenahalli and Narayan Swamy and Mohan from Arehalli in Kanakapura Taluk.

Ejaz worked as a welder, while Imran was employed in a metal cupboard manufacturing unit. Narayan and Mohan are marginal farmers, the police said. Although the incident came to light a few weeks ago, the local police tried to hush up the matter.

Parents’ intervention

However, the incident came to fore with the intervention of the victim’s parents.
On a direction from Bangalore Rural SP Dr Mahesh, Anekal inspector Venkatesh began the investigation along with his team.
