But at the end of it, you are mesmerised — by the brilliant storyline, direction and, of course, a career-best performance by Nutan. A gifted actress, throughout the film, she emotes perfectly with her face, especially her eyes, and plays the character of a woman convicted for murder with dignity. Although the film scores high on melodrama, Bimal Roy’s skillful direction is reflected in each and every scene in the film, which are delicately handled. Each element in Bandini stands out — the camera work by Kamal Bose, subtle yet powerful performances by Ashok Kumar and Dharmendra and, of course, the soulful and haunting tunes by S D Burman. Yet, all these components come together beautifully. Bandini was Bimal Roy’s last film as a director. I wish he had made more.
