Sooryakanth and Ranjani, residents of J P Nagar in Bangalore, were on their way to Ooty for their honeymoon, when their car plunged into the tank.
A native of Bijapur, Sooryakanth is the nephew of Kannada and Culture Minister Govind Karjol. Sooryakanth’s father Vijaykumar is the minister’s younger brother.
Lucky escape
“Sooryakanth was at the wheels when the mishap occurred at around 6.30 am. He tried to overtake a tempo when the left portion of the car brushed against the vehicle.
As a result, he lost control of the vehicle and turned right only to plough through the stones on the tank bund and plunged into the lake. Luckily, the branches of trees served as barricades and prevented the car from drowning,” South police station sub-inspector Venkateshaiah told mediapersons.
Fishermen at the tank helped the couple to safety. A crane belonging to KSRTC was summoned to pull out the vehicle from water. The couple who were shocked left the accident scene immediately and are in Mysore.
Following the mishap, traffic on the highway was disrupted for three hours.
