He was speaking at the valedictory of the 21st Karnataka History Congress Sammelana at Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) here on Sunday.

Alarmed at the unimpressive research projects being submitted to universities, Prof Anantharamaiah said that the topics being chosen by students for their thesis is of low quality. He said that more students are increasingly opting for Ph D and M Phil to avail the UGC grants being provided by the government.

He observed that even though many lecturers are earning more than people who are into well-paid jobs, they lack the qualities to provide better education. He pointed out the nobody is thinking about the measures to be taken to improve the standards of education.

Expressing regret, Prof Anantharamaiah said that even though the Karnataka History Congress is held every year, the decisions taken at the meeting are not implemented effectively. He urged upon Historians to join hands to save culture for the next generation.

He bemoaned that monuments and temples are being lost; even Srirangapatna is not being given importance, despite its rich history and even the most precious palm manuscripts are not being retained.
