A Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawan was also killed in a land mine blast in the same district on Friday morning during a combing operation by the Central para-military forces and the state police to nab the Naxals involved in Thursday night’s incident.

According to official reports, nearly fifty armed Maoists stopped an explosive-loaded van on the national highway 23 at Champajharan near Rourkela on Thursday night and hijacked the vehicle. Soon after, the ultras kidnapped Ajit Bardhan, an assistant sub-inspector of the Orissa police attached to Koida, who was travelling in another vehicle.

Bardhan’s body with several gun shots was recovered at a spot on the Orissa-Jharkhand border on Friday morning. The hijacked van was set on fire after looting the explosives.

Abdul Rafiq, a CRPF jawan, sustained serious injuries when a land mine set by the fleeing Naxals exploded during a combing operation on Friday morning. He succumbed to his injuries when he was being carried to a hospital in Rourkela.
