Rs 1,000 stipend for poor spinsters

Speaking at the International Women’s Day celebrations on Tuesday, he also announced plans to provide homes for anganwadi workers who did not own a house. He gave no further details on the pension scheme.

The announcements have taken everyone by surprise, including the Department of Women and Child Development. Department secretary C N Seetharam was himself unaware of the scheme and could not offer details.

However, more information is expected to emerge on Wednesday when the matter comes up for discussion in the Legislative Assembly. According to sources in the chief minister’s office, the beneficiaries would be women from below poverty line families in rural  areas.
Meanwhile, the Kittur Rani Chennamma Awards were presented to six institutions, and individual awards to 17 women who have contributed to women welfare, art, sports, education and literature.

Awards were also given to the three best Stree Shakti groups based on their performance, linkages and income-generating programmes. Four awards were given away to the best group in each of the four revenue divisions as a part of the Yashodharamma Dasappa birth centenary celebrations.

Energy Minister Shobha Karandlaje and Minister for Women and Child Development C C Patil were present.
