Karwar, Belekeri ports revenue goes up

The Belekeri port, which handles a majority of the State’s ore export, earned fee to the tune of Rs 15.03 crore in 2009-10. And, it was Rs 7.78 crore in 2006-07, Rs 13.06 crore in the next year, and Rs 5.77 crore in 2009-10 and till February end this year, it has been Rs 4.53 crore. The total fee in the last four years and up to February of this year is about Rs 46.14 crore.

In case of the Karwar port, the landing and shipping fee for handling ores touched Rs 12.06 crore in 2008-09, the highest in the last five years. The fee collection was just Rs 4.26 crore in 2007-08 and it was Rs 9.42 crore in 2009-10. Till the end of February of this year, the handling fee collection was Rs 4.97 crore. The total fee collection from 2006 has been Rs 39.40 crore.

These statistics were furnished in a reply given by Ports Minister Krishna Palemar to a question raised in the legislative council regarding the earnings by the commercial ports of Karnataka by handling export of ore from 2006 to 2011.

Replying to a question, Palemar said that Rs 15 crore has been released for desilting the Karwar port.
