City parts may get 24X7 water supply

The MCC had been mulling over providing uninterrupted water supply to certain areas of the city since quite some time now. Now the plans to provide round-the-clock water to certain areas in the city will soon become a reality.

The Mangalore City Corporation will soon finalise a Detailed Project Report (DPR) on introducing round the clock drinking water supply in the city.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, MCC Commissioner Dr K N Vijayaprakash said the civic body is intended to introduce the 24X7 water supply scheme in a phased manner. After assessing its feasibility, the civic body would take a decision on extending it to other wards. The detailed project report (DPR) being prepared by the Crisil Corporation, Mumbai, for the civic body was in the final stages of completion. They will submit the DPR soon to the Corporation.

A good water supply source, efficient supply network and effective leakage control system are essential for the implementation of the 24x7 water supply system. In fact, Mysore and Gulbarga City Corporations had introduced 24X7 water supply scheme in select wards. It may be recalled that in November 2009, the Council of the City Corporation in its meeting had agreed to introduce round the clock water supply in the civic body under public-private-partnership model.

He said “once the DPR is submitted to the Mangalore City Corporation, it would be discussed in the Council meeting. The suggestions from the Corporators would be incorporated in the report and will be implemented in a phased manner.”

He said “the DPR will include only on providing 24X7 water supply to the citizens of the Corporation. It will deal with the plugging of the non revenue water. In fact, it will find out where the leakage of water is taking place in the supplying system.” The 24X7 water supply will also ensure 100 per cent metering of the households in the City Corporation limits.

The Commissioner said “censors will be fixed in all the water supplying system, so that it will notify the leakage immediately. Even if the overhead tanks get filled, then the pump will be automatically switched off, without wasting the water. Once the project is ready, then it will be implemented step by step. In fact, the report will also make a scientific study of the pipelines in the City corporation limits. We do not have exact information on the total length of the pipelines in the Corporation limits. Hence, the DPR will be a elaborate scientific study on the water supply in the City Corporation limits,” he added.
