On  Monday, Sayoni Chatterjee, a resident of  Ulhas Nagar on the northern outskirts of Mumbai, ended her life by hanging herself from the ceiling of her bedroom.

Reason: Her mother said to have read the diary entries, revealing her close friendship, bordering on mutual affection, with a boy in her class.

After reading the diary, the shocked mother went to meet the headmistress of the Holy Family School, where Sayoni was studying in fifth standard. Ignoring Sayoni’s repeated pleas, the mother was waiting outside the head mistress’ cabin, while Sayoni returned home.

When the mother came back to her apartment, she reportedly found Sayoni hanging from a ceiling fan. The girl also had left what can be called a “suicide note,” apologising to the boy in her class. Entries in her diary suggest the two children often wrote to each other. In her last letter to her friend, found in her bedroom, she wrote, “I am sorry...when I was not there, she (Sayoni’s mother) read my personal diary...”

Senior Police Inspector of Ulhas Nagar D G Patil said: “During the examination of the body, we found a wound on her neck. According to her mother,  the girl was tense, and she committed suicide by hanging herself from the fan. No suicide note was found.”
