Dalit jeweller shot dead, locals hold SI captive in protest

The police later used force and lathicharged the mob to rescue the sub-inspector posted at Akbargnj police station and detained a number of people in this connection, official sources said here.

Mahendra Kumar was shot dead by some unidentified persons late yesterday evening when he was returning home with a bag containing jewellery, they said. Kumar was rushed to the hospital, where he was declared brought dead, police said, adding that the miscreants looted his jewellery bag.

Agitated with the police failure to arrest the miscreants, locals blocked Akbarpur-Iltifatganj road, sources said. When police attempted to clear the blockade, the protestors held SI Ramesh Kumar captive, had a scuffle with station house officer Ram Swaroop and manhandled an intelligence department sleuth.

Later, heavy force reached the spot and canecharged the protestors, sources said adding that a number of people were also detained in this connection.
