CID may investigate attack on U V Singh

The minister promised full cooperation to the Lokayukta in conducting probe into the incident by an agency of their choice.

"The Minister met me and discussed the issue. He suggested a Lokayukta inquiry into the incident. I told him it might be improper for the Institution of Lokayukta to inquire into the matter, considering Singh is part of the institution. Then, he suggested a CID inquiry and promised speedy completion of the probe," Hegde said. Ramaswamypalya corporator N Chandra, allegedly assaulted U V Singh, Karnataka State Pollution Control Board's environmental officers Madhavi and Gurudev on February 20, when they had gone to inspect the Nagavara Lake. The police suspected the involvement of a top BWSSB official in the incident.

The official was accused of granting permission to CM Enterprises, owned by Chandra's brother Saravana, to dump waste in the lake. There were complaints that industrial effluents were being let into the lake. Chandra allegedly tried running a truck filled with effluents over Singh.

He thought he could go scot-free as he was a corporator. Later, he fled to Hyderabad and headed to Chennai from there. After a hot chase of 18 days, the Northeast division police finally arrested him.
