Unveiling of statues to create problems

Last Updated 19 July 2009, 17:38 IST

The members of the Paksha and Balaga ridiculed that Chief Minister Yeddyurappa was day dreaming of the harmony between Kannadigas and Tamils and Karnataka and Tamil Nadu respectively by unveiling the statues of the poets Sarvajna and Thrivulluvar in each others state.

The government should first remodel the disfigured statue of Sarvajna at his birth place in Annigere in Dharwad district and should later install a statue at Bangalore, they added.

The State governments will not achieve anything by unveiling the statues of the poets, expressed members who said that animosity would increase in both the States when miscreants target the statues for invested interests.

Various institutions and organisations criticised BBMP’s move to unveil the statue of Thiruvulluvar which was in response to a memorandum submitted 18 years ago. The then ruling government cancelled the programme, they recalled.

However, when Veerappan kidnapped Rajkumar he (Veerappan) once again demanded unveiling the statue in Bangalore. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Karunanidhi is once again demanding the same thing and the government has fixed the date of unveiling the Statue, the members added.

Kannada Paksha General Secretary K N Prabhakar and Balaga’s General Secretary N Manjunath have urged the government to unveil the Thiruvulluvar statue at the premises of Tamil Sangha in Ulsoor and Sarvajna statue at the premises of Kannada Sangha in Ayanavaram if the statues were to be unveiled.
