Bangalore to host weightlifting nationals

Karnataka will be hosting the Senior Nationals after a gap of 12 years and the event will see the participation of 136 men and 85 women from around the country. Lifters who were part of the Indian contingent at the 2010 Commonwealth Games would also feature in the championship.

In an attempt to give a fillip to budding weightlifters, the best weightlifter at the event would be given a cash prize of Rs 10,000 by Harish, an ex-weightlifter.

KSWA will hold a Platinum Jubilee function on March 26, where weightlifters who brought laurels for the state will be honoured.

L Subramanya, technical director for the event, said the National Anti Doping Agency (NADA) would oversee the arrangements for dope testing. Samples would be collected and sent to Delhi where it would be tested at the WADA accredited laboratory, he said.

At the 2010 senior nationals held in Udaipur, Services emerged overall champions in the men’s category while Manipur were crowned the overall women’s champions.
