Mamata's photos on railway premises irk CPM

“This is a glaring example of the use of government property and power for the purpose of election campaign,” CPM state secretary Biman Bose said in a communication to the chief election commissioner.

Alleging that pictures of the Railways minister were still being displayed at the headquarters of Eastern and South Eastern Railway at Fairlie Place and Garden Reach, Bose said it was a “deliberate move” of the TMC to impress the electorate.

“Besides, in most office chambers of the Railways, calendars of 2011 with photos of  Banerjee, printed and published by the Railwaymen’s Congress, are still on display. Some posters with the Trinamool election symbol have been pasted on walls of the compound housing the railway offices in gross violation of the model code of conduct,” Bose said.

In several railway stations, TMC flags still adorn passenger waiting terminals and no action has so far been taken by the Railway authority or by the poll panel even 20 days after the announcement of the election.

A six-member team led by Chief Election Commissioner S Y Quraishi arrived here on Tuesday to review preparations for the polls. Quraishi was accompanied by Election Commissioners V S Sampat and H S Brahma. They will meet representatives of political parties and interact with district and state administration officials to take stock of the situation.
