I-T raids on Telugu actors

All the three stars had box office hits in the last two months in spite of the Telangana agitation and the consistent campaign against the films of coastal Andhra personalities.

The film “Ragada” in which Nagarjuna and Anuskha acted was a runaway success in February;  “Mirapakaya” of Ravi Teja had picked up later and snowballed into a major hit.
Industry sources said both films netted over 25 to 50 times their normal earnings.

The raids followed film industry gossip that many film personalities had invested heavily into land assets on the eastern coastal towns including Visakhapatnam in the recent months.

Industry sources said that most of them had paid out Rs 1 to Rs 10 crore in cash towards land purchase and also taken up construction of beach houses. A vernacular paper reported that about 42 Telugu film industry personalities had bought lands and launched a gated society near Visakhapatnam in the last few months.

Sources in the I-T department said besides offices and residences of relatives of the actors, producers, directors and distributors linked to the family of  Akkineni Nageswar Rao, his actor  son Nagarjuna, actor grandson Naga Chaitanya and also D Shivaprasad Reddy, producer of all of their  movies  were raided.

The premises of Annapurna studio owned by ANR and Nagarjuna were also searched   and the bank accounts of all the actors were also subject to scrutiny, they said.

This is the first major I-T raid on the Telugu film industry after the similar raids were conducted on mega star Chiranjeevi’s properties in 2003 before he entered politics.Chiranjeevi had to cough up a minimum of Rs 100 crore towards tax evasion.
