Participating in an interactive session with members of the Merchants Chamber of Commerce (MCC) here, the CEC also spoke in favour of passing stringent legislation in the Parliament to prevent criminally accused persons from fighting elections.“We need to close the election door to these persons once and for all,”  he said. In reply to a query from a member on whether the Election Commission had initiated any step to impose ban on such people to cleanse the election process, the CEC replied in the assertive.

When asked about the increasing number of violations of the election code of conduct by political parties, Quraishi said the successful holding of Bihar polls last year had proved the Commission was capable of holding free and fair election.
