Self help groups to come under poll panel scanner

Electoral officer asked to keep a check on parties offering inducements to voters

The poll panel has directed the electoral officer to keep a strict vigil over distribution of money to self help groups, distribution of goods to influence voters and utilising the services of the members of private organisations for campaign work.

Daily reports

The electoral officer has also been asked to get daily reports on the activities of the self help groups and non-governmental organisations in the district.

The poll panel has also directed that the electoral officer should keep an eye on the activities in the community halls and kalyana mantaps, so as to check voters being influenced through inducements.

Previous elections

“There have been complaints during previous elections of candidates distributing sarees, dhoties and other items in community halls and kalyana mantaps.

“Hence, directions have been issued to ensure that the community halls and kalyana mantaps are utilised only for marriages and other non poll-related activities,” the election commission has said.

If any election-related activities are taking place in these halls, the same should be reported to the district-level officials of the income tax (I-T) department, the poll panel has said.

The I-T department will look into the activities for suitable action.

Check on mass feeding

Directions have also been issued to keep a check on mass feeding activities that may be organised in the constituency, as they may be held by parties and candidates to influence voters.

There have also been strict instructions to ensure that tokens are not distributed by the candidates or party members to the voters as they can be exchanged for goods at shops.

Police complaints

The poll panel has asked the election officials to file complaints with the police if they come across any such activities.

The electoral officer has been asked to hold meetings with citizens and NGOs to take their help in preventing electoral malpractices.
