The proposal was made by Leader of the Opposition Siddaramaiah (Congress) and JDS leader H D Revanna while condoling the death of Hangal, who passed away at a hospital in Hubli this morning.

Revanna said the House should take a decision and forward the proposal to the Centre.

Law Minister S Suresh Kumar said the Government would consider the members' suggestion. The state was also considering instituting a national award in her honour, he added.

Condoling the singer's death, Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa said a statue of Hangal would be unveiled at an appropriate location in Hubli. "A proposed music university will be named after Gangubai Hangal," he said.

The Karnataka government has declared a two-day state mourning and a holiday for educational institutions and government offices in Hubli-Dharwad tomorrow. The last rites of the renowned singer will be performed at Hubli tomorrow with full state honours, official sources said.

Speaker Jagadish Shettar said many people felt she should get the honour. He noted that Hangal, a former State Legislative Council member, was a recipient of seven honorary doctorates and 48 national awards.
