The victim, identified as Ganga Devi (80), hailed from UP’s Mainpuri district. Around a dozen others were injured in the stampede and were admitted to hospital, police sources said. The stampede occurred on the stairs of the ghat when the devotees were moving down towards the river, sources said. Eye-witness accounts claimed that two persons died in the stampede. Thousands of people, including women and children, took a holy dip in the sacred river in Varanasi, Allahabad, Kanpur and elsewhere in the state on this occasion.

The temples had been closed on Tuesday evening and reopened after the eclipse ended. The famous Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi witnessed heavy rush of devotees from across the country. In Lucknow, a clear sky enabled the people to have a good view of the eclipse although it was not total. In some places, clouds played spoilsport preventing a clear view of the eclipse.
