Last Updated 07 April 2011, 17:36 IST

The chappals were thrown after Vadivelu allegedly made some abusive remarks against the AIADMK’s ally, Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) leader Vijayakanth while addressing voters at Tiruvanaikovil here on Thursday afternoon. Police said a chappal hit the actor on the back.

Angry DMK workers caught hold of the two DMDK men including party’s Srirangam Deputy secretary Masilamani, and reportedly thrashed them before handing them over to police.
The irate group also allegedly ransacked the ‘Vijayakanth Manram’ (Vijayakanth fans association building) and set it ablaze. No one was injured and the fire was put out, police said.

Police, who feared that there would be trouble if the two were detained at Srirangam police station transferred them to Town Police station and did not register any case against them till late in the evening.

The incident led to traffic jam in the area for more than an hour. Tension prevailed and police has been posted to prevent possible clashes between DMK and DMDK men in the town.
