JOIN USBheemaraya Mallappa Hosmani and Lakshmi Shiravala, both of Halisagara were in love. The boy and girl belonged to different castes, and married against the wishes of her family, nine months ago.
Advised by wellwishers to stay away from the village toescape the wrath of Lakshmi’s family, Bheemaraya and his bride lived in Bangalore for eight months.
Lost hope
They had returned to the village a month ago, hoping that Lakshmi’s family would be forgiving.
Shortly before midnight on Wednesday, Bheemaraya and his friend Bheemanna Chendu were walking home when Lakshmi’s father, Sabanna Devappa Shiravala and her brother Chennappa Sabanna Shiravala attacked them with a sword.
Seriously injured in the attack, Bheemaraya bled to death on the spot, while Bheemanna, who too suffered injuries, managed to escape. Police have registered a case on a complaint from Bheemanna and are on the lookout for the suspects.
